[Updated 5/7/2025]

On April 2, the National Endowment for the Humanities—acting under the direction of the Administration’s Department of Government Efficiency—abruptly terminated all federal funding for humanities councils.

The loss of NEH funding to humanities councils will decimate the ability of these nonprofits to serve communities in their states, eliminating programs that are essential to each state’s cultural infrastructure.

The national and local impact of these cuts has been covered extensively by national and local media. In this post, you can find national news coverage of the cuts to NEH, official statements from each humanities council, and local media coverage organized by state. Newer stories are listed first.

Don’t see enough coverage in your state? Consider writing an op-ed or letter the editor of your local news outlet explaining why humanities councils are so important.
