Indiana Humanities wins the 35th annual Schwartz Prize award for “Next Indiana Campfires,” a program that confronts questions of place, environmental stewardship, and identity through literature, hiking, and conversation.

NEH Awards $785,907 in Grants to Three State Humanities Councils

On August 2, 2017, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) announced awards of more than $39.3 million for 245 humanities projects nationwide that will support local cultural organizations and individual scholars. Of that $39.3 million, $785,907 in grants were awarded to three state humanities councils: Alabama Humanities Foundation, Indiana Humanities, and Michigan Humanities Council.

Mellon Awards FSHC $1.7 Million for “Democracy and the Informed Citizen”

The Federation of State Humanities Councils has been awarded $1.7 million by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for a new national grant program, Democracy and the Informed Citizen, which will examine the critical role of journalism and the power of the humanities.

Mellon Foundation Awards FSHC with $150,000 for “The Humanities in American Life”

This two-part initiative will collect data and impact stories from councils to create an easily accessible archive of images, content, and videos for long-term public use.

Proposals to severely cut or eliminate NEH, while dismaying, are not new. The NEH and the state humanities councils have weathered previous storms by attracting strong bipartisan support and offering outstanding programming.

November Council Pulitzer Update

Throughout November, councils hosted a variety of Pulitzer Prizes Campfires from book fairs to conferences to nature hikes coupled with literature that brought participants together in discussion and community. In addition, councils continued to host presentations, exhibits, book discussions, and writing workshops featuring Pulitzer Prize winners and works.

Pulitzer Prizes Council Campfires Events Heat Up In October

More than 30 events are occurring in October, making it one of the busiest in terms of council Campfires programming. These programs include festivals, poetry celebrations, distinguished lectures, and reading and writing workshops.
