This week humanities supporters across the country joined together to send good wishes to the NEH for their 50th anniversary. In a social media “thunderclap” of tweets and Facebook postings, which reached more than three million people, messages rolled in featuring photos and statements completing the sentence, “I love the humanities because…” The statements ranged from whimsical to profound, reflecting the full range of ways that individuals engage with the humanities to enrich their lives.
Additionally, last weekend, the Federation staff took part in another NEH 50th anniversary event, a symposium hosted by Loyola University. Duke University President Richard Brodhead, Danielle Allen and NEH Chairman William Adams all spoke about the changes that have occurred since the creation of the NEH, the models of civic education, and why the humanities matter.
