The Hawai’i Council for the Humanities has partnered with Ka Ipu Makani Cultural Heritage Center and the Center for Oral History (UH Mānoa Dept of Ethnic Studies) to support Kā Molokaʻi Makahiki, an annual and growing celebration of the unique Molokaʻi traditions of Makahiki. Saturday January 24th (9-12 noon) there will be a panel and exhibit honoring the hula lineages of Molokaʻi and the kumu that help these practices thrive into the future. We will also be helping with a oral history booth sharing oral history archives of Molokaʻi, and inviting folks to continue the joy of storytelling and story listening/gathering in their own families and communities.

This program is presented as part of By the People: Conversations Beyond 250, a national series of community driven conversations developed by humanities councils in collaboration with local partners. The initiative was created by the Federation of State Humanities Councils in partnership with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage to support public dialogue rooted in local history, culture, and lived experience.
