Fifeteen councils were nominated for the 2009 Schwartz Prize for excellence in the public humanities: Alabama, Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming.
Three councils were awarded a Schwartz Prize: California, Montana, and Virginia.
