On behalf of the 2010 Conference Planning Committee, we invite our state humanities council colleagues to propose workshop sessions for the 2010 conference, to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on November 4-6, 2010. Under the broad and flexible theme for this conference "The Search for Tierra Nueva: Navigating our Human Ties", we seek your best ideas.
Our 2010 Federation gathering will be an occasion when everyone will be asked to ponder the human ties, the connective tissues, that are integral to every aspect of the humanities. We urge participants to reflect upon the many ways in which each of us can relate our heritage, our histories, and our hopes to a quest for personal, institutional, and communal regeneration. We encourage attendees to think about the urgent needs of our country, and of a planet on which it becomes increasingly clear with every passing day that no society can behave as if it were, in John Donne's formulation, "an island, entire of itself."
We ask you to report on how councils are entering Tierra Nueva. Tell us about programs that have ventured outside our usual comfort zones and into new territories. We'd like to hear about initiatives that have used innovative formats and dynamic outreach methods to reach new audiences. We'd like to hear about your continuing experiments with new media - both successes and failures. Or perhaps you would be willing to share how you are responding to the Chairman's call for programming that builds international understanding or fosters civility?
And as always, we welcome sessions that explore the frontiers of the managerial, fiscal, and technical aspects of our businesses.
We strongly encourage proposals that experiment with format: feel free to abandon the traditional panel discussion in favor of other approaches. Sessions should certainly allow plenty of time for both dialogue and story sharing, and we urge you to be wary of the PowerPoint trap! [One logistical note-if you anticipate using a computer or other audio/video equipment, please plan to bring a laptop with you as the conference a/v budget is already stretched quite thin.]
PROPOSAL DEADLINE: Please use this form to submit proposals no later than the due date of February 15, 2010. Feel free to contact a member of the 2010 Conference Planning Committee or a member of the Federation staff with questions about the conference, its theme, or any logistics.
