Talking Service was a reading and discussion group free and open to veterans, regardless of age, gender, or length of military experience. Groups in Aurora, Effingham, Carbondale, and Anna met during the Fall of 2016. Each group met for at least six times, with a capstone visit from award-winning author and veteran Brian Turner.

Discussion leaders guided participants in conversations prompted by short readings. In partnership with the Great Books Foundation, Illinois Humanities also put together a reading packet organized around themes like “Homecoming,” “Caregiving,” “The Home Front,” and others.
