Since 1999, Mississippi Humanities Council (MHC) has joined with the University of Southern Mississippi Center for Oral History and the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in the Mississippi Oral History Project (MOHP), funded annually by the Mississippi state legislature, to carry out the Mississippi Oral History Project. This statewide initiative captures the voices of diverse Mississippians who are willing to share their experiences. Over the past ten years, the MHC has awarded over half a million dollars in grants to collect over 3,500 of these histories. All the histories are archived, transcribed, and translated into public programming. The public programming helps fulfill the educational mission of the Center and the MHC and has included curriculum development, radio and film documentaries, theatrical productions, museum exhibits, publications, and community forums.
