The Humanities Centers Initiative is an “innovative statewide partnership between Humanities NY and a network of humanities centers based at nine New York State universities. The initiative was launched in 2012 and is supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Whiting Foundation. The initiative supports humanities faculty, institutions, and grad students in their commitment to public engagement. There are two facets to the initiative:
Public Humanities Fellowship:
This year-long, $8,000 fellowship offers advanced humanities graduate students a chance to explore the public application of their scholarly interests, including training in the methods of the public humanities, networking, and professional development. Each Fellow in the cohort of 18 designs and implements a public humanities project in collaboration with a community-based partner.
Community Partnership Grants
Up to $3,000 in grant support is available for Humanities Centers to team up with local community groups to undertake a group project. Support can be for panels, performances, or collaborative planning sessions between the grantee and the center.
