The EnRICHment Opportunities speakers program supports the Rhode Island Center for the Book’s highly successful Reading Across Rhode Island (RARI) program—the annual statewide community read, made possible through a vibrant collaboration of librarians, teachers, artists, book group leaders, and readers. Each year, a new book is selected to appeal to cross-disciplinary, cross-sector, and diverse communities.
EnRICHment speakers participate in lectures, workshops, and performances on topics and themes related to each year’s book selection. EnRICHment and RARI programming culminates with a keynote by the author of the year’s selected work.
The book selected for 2017 is Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. Just Mercy is an unforgettable true story about the work of Bryan Stevenson, a gifted young attorney, as he founded Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending the poor, the wrongly condemned, and those trapped in the furthest reaches of our criminal justice system. The work examines the intersections of the United States’ justice system with race, economics, history, and culture. The book was chosen for its appeal to readers from ages 14 to 114 and its connection to topics of both local and national significance.
