PROGRAM: Community Conversations

Minnesota

Statewide, MN – [discussion] Community Conversations are events that help build thoughtful, literate, and engaged Minnesotans. This summer, Minnesota Humanities Center will host 10 listening sessions across the state to explore local issues by gathering people from diverse backgrounds to express key issues of concern and opportunity, and brainstorm ways the council can collaborate to support community solutions. PROGRAM: Čhokáta Nážiŋ – The Dakota Language Table

St. Paul, MN – [workshop] Čhokáta Nážiŋ: The Dakota Language Table workshop examines the Dakota language to understand the interdependent relationships of the land, language, and well-being of the Dakota people. Workshop participants will gain ideas for student engagement, learn hands-on activities, and leave with tools to help replicate the experience in a classroom setting. (Educators)

PROGRAM: Increase Engagement Through Absent Narratives

Select locations, MN – [workshop] In this workshop Minnesota Humanities Center showcases how to increase engagement through absent narratives using core strategies and concepts. This workshop is designed for individuals with backgrounds in education, government, or community looking to exchange insights exchange insights through personal stories, conversations, and guided reflections.  (Public)

PROGRAM: Teaching Bdote

Minnesota

St. Paul, MN – [workshop] Minnesota Humanities Center, in collaboration with Saint Paul Public Schools, is offering this workshop for educators who have taken the Bdote trip and are seeking best practices on how to share the experience with their students. Educators will leave this workshop with new resources and content, a deeper understanding, and the beginnings of an action plan to bring their students on a Bdote trip or to bring the experience into the classroom. PROGRAM: War & Memory Discussion Series

Select Locations, MN – [reading and discussion] Minnesota Humanities Center launched a four-part community conversation series highlighting authors in conversation with a public audience about war and memory. (Public)

#HumCitizen: Common Place

Minnesota

Multiple Locations, MN – [community forums] Three community forums in three different communities with Native American tribal nations will examine how journalism and democracy intersect in communities with both tribal and non-tribal governments. Events will bring together journalists, members of the tribes, and community leaders to discuss the way the media had traditionally represented indigenous people. (Public)

PROGRAM: Somali Youth Anthology

Minnesota

Statewide, MN – [reading and discussion] The Minnesota Humanities Center is seeking submissions for a new anthology project of storytelling by Somali youth. The anthology will serve as a necessary act of self-representation for Somali youth in a challenging time where their multiple identities are often vilified. Through stories and storytelling, youth will realize the power of their voices by sharing their experiences in a variety of creative formats. (Youth)

PROGRAM: Educator Institute

Omaha, MN – [workshop] The 2018 Educator Institute immerses participants in the Humanities Center’s proven approach to increase student engagement through absent narratives – those voices often left out or marginalized. This experience develops meaningful connections with MN educators and their students through practical strategies. (Educators)

Statewide, MN – [online database] The Absent Narratives Resource Collection is a searchable database of ready-to-use videos, teacher guides, and readings that support using Absent Narratives in classrooms and workplaces. (Educators)

PROGRAM: Veteran’s Voices

Statewide, MN – [award] Veterans’ Voices uses the power of the humanities to amplify the experiences and contributions of veterans while creating space for them to tell their stories through literature, theater, art, and the Veterans’ Voices Award. (Public)
