Take a Seat, and a "Stand" at the Maryland Humanities Council 2008 Chautauqua!

This July, fold up that beach blanket and forget those big screen blockbusters-MHC's Chautauqua offers the best of both worlds! Now is your chance to enjoy the balmy summer evenings outdoors while being entertained by fascinating, fun, and free living history performances.

MHC has created a new way to enjoy Chautauqua: through your phone! Call 443-315-4095, and select options that allow you to listen to and learn about Chautauqua performers, subjects, and related MHC programs. Then, let us know what you think by selecting the "response" option.

Currently in its 14th year, Chautauqua has become an anticipated seasonal tradition for history aficionados, families, tourists, social groups, and anyone who loves thought-provoking entertainment. Held under a tent at community colleges throughout Maryland, Chautauqua offers four nights of entertainment from performer/scholars who first portray a famous historical figure, then open up the stage for questions and discussion.

This year's program, "Civil Rights: Taking a Stand" will feature three champions of the American Civil Rights Movement-pacifist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (Bill Grimmette and Lenneal Henderson), activist Malcolm X (Charles Everett Pace), and the indomitable Rosa Parks (Gwendolyn Briley Strand)-and one of its most outspoken and powerful detractors-former Alabama Governor and segregationist George Wallace (Doug Mishler)-discussing their lives, motivations, and experiences, and opinions.

MHC is pleased to present this unique program at seven sites throughout the state. Enjoy four nights of entertainment at Garrett College, Chesapeake College, the College of Southern Maryland, Montgomery College-Germantown, the Community College of Baltimore County, and Cecil College. In addition, MHC is pleased to offer a one-night-only performance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by Bill Grimmette at our newest site, Wor-Wic Community College. Join MHC for this unique, outdoor summer event - no sunscreen required!
