Long before the Obamas broke ground on their vegetable garden, the Indiana Humanities Council was already planning its own backyard Victory Garden to help rally its neighborhood--Indianapolis' Old Northside--around a common cause and promote civic engagement. The garden is also a soft launch for the Council's two-year program, called "Food for Thought" which will begin in January, 2010.
The gardeners include staffers from the Council, as well as housemates from the Indiana Recycling Coalition and Central Indiana Land Trust and next-door neighbors at The Villa restaurant/spa/inn. The Council celebrated its first harvest day on May 20, enjoying crisp radishes and fresh greens, and plans on using the fresh produce throughout the summer. The garden was designed by a master gardener, and includes rain-collecting trenches and barrels.
