Transportation Information

Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC)

The Salt Lake City International Airport is located five (5) miles northwest of downtown Salt Lake City and is the recommended airport for the 2016 National Humanities Conference. A number of transportation options, including taxis, shuttles, Uber, Lyft, and Salt Lake City’s TRAX Light Rail provide regular service from the airport to downtown Salt Lake City.

Ground Transportation

Check the public transportation section below for SLC’s TRAX (light rail) line, which can get you to and from the airport to the hotel with no stops for $2.50 plus a two-block walk. The 30 minute estimate includes wait time for the next train.

According to the Salt Lake City International Airport, maximum rates for ground transportation providers servicing one to two city-bound customers cannot exceed $25. Taxis, limousines, and other services operating under these fare limits can be found in the pick-up lanes outside of the baggage claim in Terminal 1 and 2. Though cabs are not allowed to charge more than $25 for one or two persons, travelers should confirm the fee before getting in the car. According to Utah Humanities, the cost is often negotiable and shouldn’t cost more than $20 to travel to the Hilton from the airport. For example, many cabs will waive the additional fee if you have more than two people, if asked.

Lyft and Uber are also legally operating in Salt Lake City and at the airport. Designated pick-up areas for these services are indicated by curbside signs and are located in the middle traffic lanes outside the baggage claim in Terminal 1 and 2. Uber fare estimates from the airport to the conference hotel are $10-$13.

Haroon Transportation offers direct shuttle service to and from the Hilton Salt Lake City Center for $12 per person, each way. Call 855-316-6888 or visit their website to request shuttle service.

Driving time is approximately 12 minutes.

Public Transportation

The TRAX Green Line services downtown Salt Lake City from the Salt Lake City International Airport with trains running every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes on weekends. The Airport Station is located at the south end of Terminal 1. The trains run from 5:40 am to 11:25 pm.

To reach the Hilton Salt Lake City Center using TRAX, take the Green Line from the airport and go nine (9) stops to Gallivan Plaza. Upon exiting the station, head south on Main Street toward 300 South Broadway and make a right. Then turn right onto West Temple. The Hilton Salt Lake City Center will be on your right. The walk time from the Gallivan Plaza station to the hotel is approximately five (5) minutes (0.2 miles). The total travel time from the airport to the hotel is approximately 30 minutes.

The first train leaves Gallivan Plaza station for the airport at 5:13 am and the last train to the airport leaves at 10:58 pm.

One-way fare on TRAX is $2.50. View the TRAX Trip Planner or download one UTA’s planning apps. Photo Credit: Alan Yorgason

Walking, Biking, and Car Sharing

Walking Notes:
Salt Lake City blocks are nearly twice as long as most cities – seven blocks equals one mile – therefore adjust walking expectations accordingly. Also the city is laid out in an X-Y grid, with Temple Square at the center. South Temple Street is point zero on the X-axis (east-west) and Main Street is point zero on the Y-axis (north-south). 300 South means three blocks south of the Temple; 200 East means two blocks east of the Temple. West Temple runs north-south; North Temple and South Temple run east-west. That makes the hotel 2.5 blocks south of Temple Square.

Biking Notes:
Green Bike is Salt Lake City’s non-profit bike sharing initiative. The cost of a 24-hour pass is $7.00 and passes are available for purchase at each station. There are two Green Bike Stations located within a block of the Hilton Salt Lake City: on Broadway street, on the south side of the hotel, and one right across Gallivan Center TRAX station, one block east of the hotel. For more information and to download their app, visit their website.

Enterprise Car Share:
Want access to a car, but don’t want to pay for a rental? As a member of Enterprise Car Share, users can access cars at multiple points throughout the city for a fee of $4.75 per hour. The closest station to the hotel is 225 S. Main Street. For more information, visit their website. *Please note that there is an application fee (up to $25) and an annual membership fee (up to $50) for using this program.
